<h4>Opening Up the Mind to Innovation</h4>

The support and development of innovative individuals and SMEs in the kingdom through engagement, training, and investment to expand its business and tech sectors.


A program spanning three years in partnership with Monsha’at, composed of 14 innovation challenges, seven bootcamps, and 10 innovation seminars.


The development of 80 innovative ideas due to the increased knowledge and training provided to the 3,598 participants. The success of the program lead Monsha’at to signing a partnership agreement with TAM to launch the Open Innovation Center in 2021.

What exactly is open innovation? It is the process of being open to sharing and receiving innovative information and ideas from inside and outside an organization. But, then what? Well, organizations collaborate with these creative minds that came up with the innovations to transform them from a mere thought into usable products, services, and procedures.
For Saudi Arabia, facilitating innovation proves its local and international adaptability towards creativity and diversity within the business and technology spectrums. When the Saudi Vision 2030 was announced in 2016, one of its priorities was to strengthen small and medium sized enterprises (SME) within the kingdom. This allows it to fulfill its economic diversification plan, especially since SMEs made up 29% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2018, a growth of 45% since the Vision became the threshold.
One major move the kingdom made was to immediately bring to life the Saudi Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority, or Monsha’at, whose key objective is to support, develop, and nurture the SME sector. The authority was the means by which Saudi Arabia addressed the difficulties that SMEs had been facing, such as financial backing, lack of information and contacts, and unorganized business plans.

<h2>A penny for your thoughts</h2>
Fikra (Arabic for “idea”) Platform is an open innovation and participatory thinking platform developed by Monsha’at. For three consecutive years, TAM and Monsha’at worked hand in hand to ensure the complete success of the endeavor, reach out to as many aspiring innovators as possible, and provide them with one of the greatest experiences.
The Fikra Platform launch event was held in the country’s capital, Riyadh, at the Saudi International Conference and Exhibition for Internet of Things in 2019. It was attended by the governor and deputy governor of Monsha’at as well as the Minister of Communications.
The beginning stages of TAM’s preparation of the platform centered around three main elements: the name (to be used across all promotional campaigns), the website (to receive submissions), and the challenges. After interviewing multiple experts across the different fields and conducting thorough research and analysis, a total of 14 challenges in collaboration with 14 different private and public sector entities, such as Noon, Al Dawaa Pharmacy, and the General Commission for Audiovisual Media, were chosen to represent the program.
The challenges focused on a digital solution-finding trajectory for current or future obstacles within multiple industries, including education, engagement, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce among others. The main goals for this program were to attract innovative private and public sector solutions, increase demand for innovation by making things interesting, engage the community, and support local talents and creatives.
The overall marketing strategy involved regularly uploading social media posts from the Monsha’at official Twitter and LinkedIn accounts over a three-year timespan as well as the employment of local influencers. Traditional media coverage from popular local newspapers such as The Economist (الاقتصادية) and Saudi Gazette aided in pushing things forward towards the public, while direct communication through emails and WhatsApp messaging hammered home the spreading word about the Fikra Platform challenges. The combination of these promotional and engagement moves resulted in the submission of 3,598 innovations, most of which favored .
A total of 10 seminars and 7 training bootcamps were assembled throughout the program’s duration as part of its objective to support participants in advancing their innovations. Every challenge had its own judging committee which resulted in 42 official winners (three from each challenge category) and 80 developed ideas. The majority of the submissions leaned towards the design of watches inspired by Saudi Heritage and the creation of social security programs.
However, in order to succeed, the competitors had to get to work on the planning and licensing processes while also handing in a business model that could be broadened. Additionally, they had to have a clear marketing strategy and financial summary, as well as a serious attitude towards implementation.
The success of the Fikra Platform program lead Monsha’at to sign a partnership agreement with TAM in June of 2021 to launch its very own Saudi Open Innovation Center located within Monsha’at’s headquarters in Riyadh.

<h4>Investing in the Youth to Create an Innovative Culture</h4>

The implementation of Misk’s Innovation Diwan initiative which sought innovative solutions for challenges in the sectors of health, social responsibility, youth capabilities development, and quality of life. The five winning teams received support from sponsors to officially launch their initiatives and create positive public impact in the process.

Such endorsement encourages Saudi youth to be invested in their society and to cultivate a dynamic mindset for innovative, context-specific solutions. The majority of the Saudi population is young; supporting them creates pioneers who can realize Vision 2030’s goals for a future-oriented and thriving society.

Remarkable reforms have swept the public sector since the launch of Vision 2030, including the launch and improvement of programs related to housing, health, economics, and human capabilities development, among other areas. One important pillar in the realization of the nation’s lofty ambitions is investment in youth. Indeed, more than two thirds of the Saudi population consists of youth and children, who are the foundation of a thriving society and who hold the promise of a bright future.
The Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk) was established in 2011 to create a nurturing environment that hones talents. Misk empowers the country’s youth across diverse fields that include education, entrepreneurship, culture, creative arts, science, and technology. Through innovative programs, vibrant incubators, and valuable partnerships with local and global organizations, the foundation invests in local intellectual capital and develops the community’s capabilities. This, in turn, forms the essence of a knowledge-based society that is forever learning and progressing.
The rewards form as a cascade of economic benefits, enhanced skills, and critical thinking that will come to characterize Saudi individuals and society as a whole. With locals providing solutions to social problems, a positive feedback loop forms wherein challenges spur innovation, and innovation invites further opportunities for growth.
<h2>Cultivating a Visionary Mindset to Design Local Solutions</h2>
In its effort to support the growth of social innovation, Misk launched Innovation Diwan, a program designed to foster proactive community engagement among Saudi youth. Using a crowdsourcing model, the initiative invited bright minds to develop innovative solutions for challenges that face their community, specifically, solutions that were informed by the lens of the local context. Four challenges were identified and addressed by the formation of over 50 ideas and holistic teams.
The competing teams developed their concepts into detailed initiatives, with the five winning teams receiving support and sponsorships that enable them to create positive public impact. Throughout this rewarding journey, TAM offered its assistance across all of the four main phases of the program which were made up of: 1) Challenge Selection, 2) Idea Submission and Team Formation, 3) Boot Camp and Solution Development, and finally 4) Pitching and Adoption.
In the first phase, TAM collaborated to design a thorough research plan and methodology, focusing on creating surveys, individual interviews, and focus group workshops to collect a list of possible challenges. Based on discussions and the emerging patterns, four key challenges were identified in the areas of health, social responsibility, youth capabilities development, and quality of life.
During phase two, TAM engaged the community, through direct and indirect marketing, in order to encourage their participation in the program. Multiple channels were used to spread awareness and call the youth to action.  For example, college students, entrepreneurs, and previous Misk participants were contacted directly through mobile and email communication means, while indirect marketing took the form of social media platforms, Twitter and Instagram.
Digital platforms were designed and launched, with one targeting ideas submission and the other focusing on skills needed to realize these ideas, before the two were connected to create 50+ teams of capable individuals ready to execute a given idea. The ideas themselves were selected according to multiple standards, such as feasibility, clarity, originality, and impact.
On to phase three, where ideas turn to substantial initiatives. The teams participated in two boot camps, one virtual and the other in-person. TAM endeavored to design the content of this training, which included interactive discussions, lectures, workshops, and guidance from mentors and experts. By designing a strong methodology, TAM helped the teams design and deliver innovative solutions. These, in turn, were evaluated against specific criteria, with 15 teams being nominated, and five teams winning the opportunity to connect with sponsors.
For the fourth and final phase, a document was presented to potential sponsors, from private and public sector entities alike. Sponsors deliberated the types of support they could provide to initiatives, whether it be help through offering knowledge and guidance or backing in terms of logistics, marketing, funding, or intellectual property. This way, the winning initiatives could obtain the substantial assistance needed to launch their projects, thereby creating positive public impact.
Overall, the entire program itself brought out the best qualities of Saudi youth and society, highlighting the traits of altruism, innovation, engagement, diligence, competitiveness, and generosity. It paved a way for the youth to expend their energy in prosocial ways, devising solutions to problems that directly concern them and affect their lives and community. It is the hope that the general society felt its concerns heard, and that the youth built confidence in their capabilities and their problem-solving abilities. In fact, participants’ rating of the program (through a distributed survey) was overwhelmingly favorable, for it likely boosted their feelings of mastery and accomplishment. This foretells of an optimistic future for Innovation Diwan and its goal in creating an innovative culture that looks within when facing challenges, and is able to rise up to them, just as Vision 2030 aspires.
